Astronauts are essential for conducting research and improving technology. One Scientist astronaut can do all types of science research, or you can have up to 3 Scientists working in each laboratory for greater efficiency (working on up to 3 types of science research at once). Unlocking research may require several different types of science points such as chemistry, biology or engineering. To earn points, different resources must be collected at the science laboratory, either by manual inventory transfer, conveyor belts or transport bots.
This is a summary of the resources and basic production chains needed to gain the different science points.
Tier 1: Basic Science
This can be obtained automatically when completing many activities such as hand-mining or processing asteroids from an asteroid catcher.
Tier 2: Engineering Science
You must unlock Engineering to gain Engineering points and you need a science laboratory but you don't need astronauts just yet. Engineering Science helps unlock technologies such as Construction, Manufacturing and Solar Energy.
1 Engineering Science = 2 Iron Bars + 2 Copper Bars
You will need:
- Hand-mining/Asteroid Catcher/Drill/Mine - to collect Iron Ore and Copper Ore
- Smelter - to convert Iron Ore to Iron Bars and Copper Ore to Copper Bars
Tier 3: Chemistry Science
You must unlock Chemistry to gain Chemistry points and you need a science laboratory and a Scientist astronaut. Chemistry Science helps unlock technologies such as Transport Tubes, Advanced Smelting, Advanced Construction and Metallurgy - basically unlocking more advanced resources and more efficient processing and transportation of resources.
1 Chemistry Science = Scientist + 4 Iron Rods + 8 Dirt
You will need:
- Hand-mining/Asteroid Catcher/Drill/Mine - to collect Iron Ore and Carbon
- Hand-mining/Drill - to collect Dirt from planetoids
- Smelter - to convert Iron Ore to Iron Bars and to smelt Iron Plates with Carbon into Iron Rods
- Constructor - to convert Iron Bars into Iron Plates
Tier 4: Biology Science
You must unlock Biology to gain Biology points and you need a science laboratory and a Scientist astronaut. Biology Science helps unlock technologies such as Agriculture, Meal Preparation, Animal Breeding and Forestry - anything to do with plants and animals.
1 Biology Science = Scientist + 4 Carbon Fiber + 8 Oxygen Tanks
You will need:
- Hand-mining/Asteroid Catcher - to collect Carbon and Ice
- Constructor - to convert Carbon into Carbon Fiber
- Ice Breaker - to convert Ice into Water (a Water Cell for water storage is also helpful)
- Oxygen Generator - to convert Water into Oxygen Tanks
Tier 5: Space Science
You must unlock Space Science to gain Space points and you need a science laboratory and a Scientist astronaut. Space Science helps unlock technologies such as Navigation, Space Mapping and Communications - promoting space travel.
1 Space Science = Scientist + 4 Motherboards + 4 Aluminium Bars
You will need:
- Hand-mining/Asteroid Catcher/Drill/Mine - to collect Copper Ore
- Hand-mining/Drill/Mine - to collect Aluminium Ore from planetoids
- Smelter - to convert Copper Ore to Copper Bars and Aluminium Ore to Aluminium Bars
- Constructor - to convert Copper Bars to Copper Plate and Copper Wire to Electronic Parts
- Manufacturer - to convert Copper Plate to Copper Wire and Electronic Parts to Motherboards
Tier 6: High Tech Science
You must unlock High Tech to gain High Tech points and you need a science laboratory and a Scientist astronaut. High Tech Science helps unlock technologies such as Star Gates and Fusion Energy - advanced technology for traveling through Black Holes.
1 High Tech Science = Scientist + 1 Polymer + 1 Concrete
You will need:
- Hand-mining/Drill to collect Stone Blocks and Wood Logs from planetoids
- Hand-mining/Drill/Mine - to collect Uranium Ore from planetoids
- Circular Saw - to convert Wood Logs into Wood Planks and Stone Blocks into Stone Plates
- Advanced Smelter - to convert Uranium Ore into Uranium Rods and Stone Plates into Concrete
- Advanced Manufacturer - to combine Uranium Rods and Wood Planks into Polymer
